The tag to Widget’s tent. From The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern:
“…a black and white etching of a child in a bed covered in fluffy pillows and a checkered quilt, not in a nursery but under a star-spangled night sky… The opposite side is white with elegant calligraphy in black ink that reads: Bedtime Stories/ Eventide Rhapsodies/ Anthologies of Memory/ Please enter cautiously/ and feel free to open what is closed.”

My latest letterpress side project: printing tickets to the Night Circus! I printed a set on white paper with black ink, then a set on black paper with silver ink. Based on Erin Morgenstern’s novel “The Night Circus”.

The Night Circus was a constant delight. Right from the start Eric Morgenstern’s light careful descriptive writing caught me up and held me. Stretching over a thirty year period (the 1870s-early 1900s) this book chronicles the early history of the Le Cirque des Rêves, a travelling circus which opens at nightfall and closes at dawn. The black and white tents appear without warning and disappear just as quietly, travelling freely across Europe and North America. But as enchanting as the circus is, it is only a stage for something even deeper and far more magical.
Two magicians have chosen students and bound them into long-running a contest. Prospero, a well-known stage magician, chooses his out-of-wedlock daughter, Celia. The illusive Mr H—- chooses Marco, an unwanted boy from a London orphanage. The magicians take care over their student’s educations but little else, and both students lead lonely, painful childhoods. Celia and Marco grow up under the loaming shadow of the competition, yet neither student knows the rules, the ultimate goal of the contest or even the identity of their opponent. As young adults, both begin working for Le Cirque des Rêves, each trying to influence it with their magic. Defying their teachers, Celia and Marco begin instead to collaborate, one from inside the circus and one from outside to build something beyond what either could imagine.
This book was my favorite book read in April, and it has also joined my list of favorite books of all time. Expect to see some Night Circus artwork very soon.

I finally finished coloring my second drawing for “The Blog of Eugenia H Watson” by Madlori. Here she is, working on the blog!
9x10 inches, colored pencil
I had an extremely hard time getting good reference images of that red and gold wallpaper behind her. If you google ‘sherlock wallpaper’ or similar its always the other paper, the black and white one, that comes up. If anyone has a good image of this wallpaper (or a link to the image) which you would be willing to send to me on tumblr I would be extremely grateful.

After what felt like 10,000 hours of hatching, the second chapter of The Thief’s Tale (The Messenger) is finished. I have posted the first 4 pages to Smackjeeves and will be posting the pages simultaneously to Deviantart.
This chapter is much shorter than the first one (only 8 pages) and it’s a prequel. Chapter three will also be a prequel, because apparently I can’t write stories in order!
